The Policies and Procedures of the Archdiocese of Chicago are intended to provide uniform standards for recurring situations in the parishes and agencies of the Archdiocese, which covers Cook and Lake Counties in Illinois. Policies are fundamental norms that state fundamental principles in broad terms; procedures are more explicit instructions that specify the details of how the policies are to be implemented.
The format for the presentation of the policies and procedures highlights the distinction between the two: policies are highlighted by surrounding them with a double-lined border; procedures follow immediately in normal font. Introductory notes, comments, and documentary sources are given in italics.
There are five volumes of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Policies and Procedures, following the topical arrangement of the Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law, as follows:
Book I – General Norms, Accountability, and Ecclesiastical Processes
Book III – The Teaching Office of the Church (Catholic Schools, Catechesis and Communications)
Book IV – The Sanctifying Office of the Church (Sacramental and Liturgical Life)
Book V – The Temporal Goods of the Church (Administrative, Financial and Legal Matters)
There is a Table of Contents and an Index for each Book. Please note: the Indexes are subjective and should not be considered the definitive arbiter of content. We are planning search engine capabilities for all of the Books in the near future.
